Dreamworks, founded in 1995 by the great Steven Spielberg, Jeffery Katzenberg, and David Geffen has been a pioneer in animation and realistically the only studio that could be considered a true competitor for Pixar. This list of great Dreamworks films is staggering: Shrek, Madagascar, How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, Megamind, and Rise of the Guardians just to name a few. They are very successful in making children's cartoons with just enough adult humor to keep mom and dad from getting super bored. Always a successful mix.

We are very happy to have recently acquired a large number of officially licensed t-shirts from Dreamworks movies and are listing them all here. Dreamworks has had a long and complicated life. It was founded in 1994 as a counter to Disney after Jeffrey Katzenberg left the mouse after a series of blowups with then Disney CEO Micheal Eisner. He teamed up with Steven Spielberg and David Geffin to form Dreamworks Animation.

Their intention was to make more adult, edgier cartoons and most of their first films were rated PG (when you really had to want to be PG to get that rating in a cartoon). A lot of what they did was poke the Mouse by putting in subtle (and not so subtle-just look at Shrek) inside Disney jokes. Disney reacted by more or less ignoring them and continuing to be the largest entertainment studio in history but you always have to love the plucky underdog.

They had a number of good to mediocre showings (Antz, Prince of Egypt, Chicken Run, the Road to El Dorado) and seemed to be on it's way to just another cartoon studio to clutter up entertainment history until the magic summer of 2001 came around.

This was a summer of cartoon bombs with Atlantis: the Lost Empire (who even remembers that one?) and Titan AE (nerds remember that one but that's it) both tanking horribly and setting the stage for Dreamworks first real hit: Shrek.

The combination of great story, animation, and Mike Myers voice helped Shrek cement Dreamworks into Hollywood and set the stage for the rest their big hits like Madagasar, Kung Fu Panda, and How to Train Your Dragon as well as a number of indy nerd favs like Megamind and the Croods. These days Dreamworks is a solid hitter and at NerdKungFu we the staff always take time off to go see any new film they come up with.
