The Lord of the Rings. It’s an OG fantasy novel written by J.R.R. Tolkien that’s become the standard for all stories in the fantasy genre ever since. It’s a classic tale of friendship, love, and an epic of good versus evil – a staple and an irreplaceable entry into the annals of modern mythology. Sauron, one of the Maiar of Tolkien’s other books, sought to envelop Middle Earth in darkness through his orcs and twisted humans. The Fellowship who sought to stop him is represented by the remaining free people of Middle Earth: men, elves, dwarves, and hobbits – a race who loved the quiet and simple life but will never be the same again after four of its sons decide to leave the comfort of their home called the Shire and do good for the rest of the world.
"They have a Cave Troll" was unquestionably one of the most obvious "Oh F&#%" moments within Lord of the Rings. When I first saw the movie with my mother, I was a preteen kid and had read The Hobbit several years before and grasped it, but never got around to the larger tomes. Yet when this scene rolled around, tensions high from the fight, twitchness in reaction to the carelessness of our favorite Took hobbit and all Boromir has to say is, "They have a cave troll"... Well, damn.
This T shirt really does sum it up for all of those moments. A mixture of "We are doomed," "Bring it on" and "Sigh... let's do this."
For once, I'd like to be in a situation where the good guys can proudly declare "WE have the cave troll." But of course, that is not soon coming since the series is over and the man who created it is long gone. Speaking of, a little digging and several hours of reading produced a massive respect for J.R.R. Tolkien. He really wasn't some paltry figure to be laughed at. That man was incredible in more ways than one, from calling Hitler a "ruddy little ignoramus" to his correspondence in attempting to get The Hobbit translated into German resulting in this jaw-dropping reply to their inquiries as to his bloodlines. He was a absolute force to be reckoned with and certainly deserves to be saluted even while six feet under.
This T-shirt is great if you have one of those days, vanquishing cave trolls or just tackling every day life.
Plus, who knows, “A single dream is more powerful than a thousand realities.” - J. R.R. Tolkien. Maybe the good guys get a cave troll in the end after all, or The White Wizard, that works just as well.
